How to Create Your Daily Skincare Routine

face-close-upTypically when a person’s skin looks great, they feel great. So when our skin isn’t doing so well it’s safe to assume that we don’t feel tiptop either.

At Dermatology Consultants in Lynchburg, VA, we know that healthy skin is important and understand how frustrating it can be figuring out what’s best for you as an individual. So here are a few essential tips from our dermatologists to help keep your skin glowing and clean.

 Know Your Skin

In order to determine a skincare routine that is ideal for you, you first have to figure out your skin type. The different skin types are:

  • Normal: Clear balanced skin that is not too dry, oily, or sensitive.
  • Dry: If your skin is scaly, rough, or suffers from flakiness or peeling.
  • Oily: If your skin has large pores and is typically shiny, greasy, and prone to break outs.
  • Sensitive: Your skin reacts, stings, or burns when you use skincare products or makeup.
  • Combination: If your skin is dry or normal in some spots and oily in others. (This is the most common skin type.)

How to Treat Your Skin

Knowing your skin type will determine what cleansers you should use. Our dermatologists at Dermatology Consultants have experience working with all skin types, and recommend the following:

  • Normal/Combination Skin: Use a gentle cleanser. If the cleanser is too harsh for you or still leaves your face oily, swap it out for a new one. Don’t use just any soap!
  • Dry Skin: Use cleansers that do not have alcohol or fragrances in them. Also, use warm water when rinsing the face because water that is too hot can actually remove the oils from your skin. If you still have flaky skin, try exfoliating at least once a week.
  • Oily Skin: Use cleansers that are oil free and use lots of warm water. If you still struggle with oily skin, you may consider adding a toner to your routine. Toner makes your face less shiny by removing extra oil and dirt, but it can irritate the skin.
  • Sensitive Skin: Use cleansers that are very gentle and don’t have a lot of ingredients. Try to avoid products with alcohol or fragrance and instead buy cleansers that have natural calming ingredients. Wash with warm water and pat dry your face since rubbing can cause irritation.

Moisture Is Key

All skin needs moisture, even oily skin. Our dermatologists recommend that you apply moisturizer every day and right after you wash your face to help seal in natural moisture. If you struggle with oily skin or have acne, try a lightweight or oil-free moisturizer so you don’t block your pores. In addition, this is a good time to sneak some sunscreen into your daily skincare routine. Utilize products that have SPF or use a separate sunscreen product to help prevent skin cancer.

When to Wash Your Face

If you workout or wear makeup, it's important to wash your face before going to bed. Going to sleep without washing a sweaty or makeup-coated face can clog your pores and cause acne. Keep in mind though, there is such a thing as over-washing your skin. Try to wash your skin no more than twice a day, and only once with a cleanser.

How to Treat Pimples

As tempting as it is, don’t pop your pimples! Popping pimples can irritate the skin and cause scarring or infections. Use acne-fighting products and be patient, since they may take some time to work. If you are really struggling with acne, our dermatologists at Dermatology Consultants are here to help.

Avoid Tanning

A tan may be pretty, but tanning causes damaged skin. Tanning increases your risk of developing skin cancer due to the increased UV exposure, and can cause leather-like skin and spots. Regardless if you tan or not, at Dermatology Consultants we encourage yearly skin exams to catch any cancerous growths.
