Intense Pulsed Light for Younger, Clearer, & More Vibrant Skin

Screen-Shot-2017-06-28-at-9.10.23-PMIntense Pulsed Light (IPL) can be a fantastic skin treatment option for people interested in improving the appearance of their skin. This non-invasive treatment works gently, safely, and effectively to treat a wide range of skin conditions and irregularities, resulting in skin that’s more youthful looking and vibrant.

What Is IPL?

Intense Pulsed Light, which is also called photorejuvenation, is a non-ablative treatment that utilizes bursts of pulsed light to gently and effectively penetrate the skin’s deeper layers. The result is skin that’s clearer, smoother, and more evenly toned. Without disrupting the skin’s outer surface, IPL can simultaneously treat multiple skin problems. Intense Pulsed Light treatment is typically done on the face, neck, shoulders, hands, and/or chest.

What Conditions Can Be Treated with IPL?

The board-certified dermatologists at Dermatology Consultants use the Palomar Starlux Intense Pulsed Light System to treat numerous skin conditions and irregularities including:

●      Sun damage

●      Rosacea

●      Brown spots on the face, hands, and body

●      Mild acne scars

●      Fine facial lines

●      Broken capillaries

Intense Pulsed Light treatment can even be used to permanently remove unwanted hair for an improved appearance and better self-confidence.

What to Expect During IPL Treatment

Photorejuvenation with IPL at our Lynchburg, VA dermatologists’ office is administered through a hand-held device that emits intense pulses of light. These bursts of light penetrate deep into the skin to target and destroy problematic skin cells, particularly those containing excessive amounts of pigment. Because this treatment is non-ablative, there is no damage done to the surrounding healthy skin cells and the patient feels little discomfort during the procedure.

Each IPL session typically takes less than 20 minutes to complete. Your dermatologist will gently press the IPL hand piece against your skin, wherein the painless pulses of light are emitted. Most people find the procedure very tolerable and do not require a topical anesthetic, although some patients experience a tingling sensation or slight pinching on the skin.

Most people require a series of two to six treatments, usually one every three to six weeks, to achieve the desired results. Your dermatologist will customize your treatment plan based on your specific skin problem(s) and goals.

After Treatment

Immediately following the treatment, you can expect a mild sunburn-like sensation that may be accompanied by some redness and minor swelling. These after-treatment symptoms are temporary and normally disappear quickly. In the days following the IPL treatment, dark areas can flake and peel as the skin renews itself. Your Lynchburg, VA dermatologist may recommend that you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect your newly-rejuvenated skin.

Benefits of IPL Treatment

People who undergo IPL treatment enjoy many benefits including:

●      A more youthful appearance for better self-confidence

●      Treatment that is non-invasive and non-abrasive

●      Little to no discomfort

●      Convenient and fast treatment that can be done during a lunch hour

●      No downtime post treatment
