Beautiful Legs Year Round

Just because summer is winding down, doesn't mean you need to stop showing off your legs. However, if you have blue and red veins crawling up your legs—spider veins—you may feel self-conscious about this.

If spider veins are affecting your life and confidence, never fear; you don’t have to go through this season or any other with a spotlight on your spider veins. If you’re ready to do away with those unsightly spider veins, Dermatology Consultants can help with sclerotherapy treatment.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are very common, affecting 30% of women. They are enlarged or dilated venules (tiny veins) that appear in a group close to the outer layer of your skin. Spider veins get their name because they look like a spider spreading across your leg. These veins are likely inherited, but can also be caused by pregnancy, age, obesity, and prolonged standing. Spider veins are typically not dangerous, but you might have some symptoms of itching or burning. They also could be a sign of a more serious circulatory disorder. Spider veins can sometimes appear with, or be confused with, varicose veins, which are swollen veins filled with pooled blood that pop out from the surface of your skin and may cause more serious symptoms.

Left untreated, your spider veins could grow and possibly become painful. Almost any healthy individual is a candidate for Sclerotherapy, except those who are pregnant, take birth control pills, or have had prior blood clots.

Making Spider Veins Disappear

It’s not magic, but your Lynchburg dermatologist can help make your legs look years younger with a safe, proven medical treatment for spider veins called sclerotherapy. Used since the 1930s, this procedure can treat both the symptoms and causes of your spider and varicose veins with no hospital stay and same-day recovery. The treatment involves injecting the source of your bad veins with a solution (usually of soap or salt) that seals it off from your other, healthy veins and causes the spider veins to dry up, collapse, and disappear. Your body then automatically pushes your blood into your good veins, which improves your circulation and keeps additional spider veins from developing.

How Does Sclerotherapy Remove Spider Veins?

The professionals at Dermatology Consultants are experienced and skilled in treating all types of skin conditions, from skin cancer to these commonplace spider veins. Here’s what you can expect if you choose to undergo our effective sclerotherapy procedure:

  1. You will have an initial consultation with one of our cosmetic dermatologists who will evaluate your vein condition and determine if you are a candidate for sclerotherapy.

  2. Once your are cleared for sclerotherapy treatment, we will take digital photos of your legs and discuss with you the target areas for treatment—the areas that you are most concerned about.

  3. When you come into our Lynchburg, VA office for your procedure, we will confirm the areas for initial treatment (only a set amount of solution can be injected at one time). Then you will lie comfortably on our office treatment table while a dermatologist, with a nurse’s assistant, administers the injections into the designated veins with a tiny needle. You may experience slight discomfort during the injection process, including a burning sensation, but it should not last longer than 20 seconds per injection. We suggest wearing loose fitting pants or sweats to your appointment.

  4. Once the injections are made, the assistant will bandage each of the injection sites. The entire sclerotherapy treatment at our dermatology outpatient facility usually takes around 15 to 30 minutes.

  5. After the bandages are applied, your entire treatment site will be wrapped with a compression bandage and you will be on your way.

  6. You may experience bruising around the injection sites, which is normal. You may also feel an itching on your legs as the solution does its work, but you should be able to resume normal activities immediately. However, your Lynchburg dermatologist does recommend that you stay away from sun and strenuous activity or exercise for a week to ten days. Additionally, you will be asked to wear compression stockings for a few weeks to assist with the healing. Within two to four weeks, your spider veins should fade.

  7. Depending on their density, you may need additional treatments to erase all of your spider veins. It is possible for spider veins to recur in different areas, opening up the need for further treatment in the future.
