Sun Protection Tips for Summer

Summer is just around the corner, and while that means a lot of good times by the water and fun under the sun, it also means a serious threat to your skin: danger from sun damage. While a day spent playing by the pool may be fun in the moment, failing to protect your skin from sun damage can quickly spell disaster. Sunburns are painful and uncomfortable, and over time, repeated sun damage greatly increases your risk for wrinkles, age spots, and skin cancer. Thankfully, there's plenty you can do to protect your skin and keep yourself safe from the sun.

Sunscreen

Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, and one that offers both UVA and UVB protection. Reapply regularly, as sunscreen does wear off over time, and always double-check the expiration date to make sure you're within its effective shelf life.

Clothing

Covering up is a great way to protect your skin, so look for loose fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants made from tightly woven materials whenever possible. At the very least, always try to wear a t-shirt or beach cover up - but make sure these aren't your only line of defense.

Hats & Sunglasses

Opt for a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears, and neck from the sun, and double that up with sunglasses to protect your eyes from the harshness of bright sunlight. If you can't wear a hat with a brim that goes all the way around, be sure to liberally apply sunscreen to your ears and neck.
